What is SEO? – Search Engine Optimization Explained
What is SEO? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization – but you might have already known that. Check out this episode of ASKyH to get familiar with the world of organic website optimization, its key terms and a general understanding of what it takes to improve your website!
Many people have heard of SEO, or at least heard of the term, but not everybody really knows it has been around for almost as long as the Internet has.
So what is SEO and how can you use it to survive in today’s modern world? Come find out.
Hi everyone my name is Daniel and this is ASKyH, where you can ask me anything, or almost anything. So what is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which might sound quite broad but in actuality it is. The idea behind SEO is to help a website rank as high as possible in search results. Each such website tries to rank for specific set of keywords. Those keywords are interchangeably called either keywords or search terms.
Optimizing a website includes several different aspects, such as
- keywords,
- metadata,
- backlinks
- and content.
In recent years, marketing has switched from the offline world to the online world.
To understand SEO better, think of online marketing as a type of virtual mall or shopping district. If you want new clothes, you’ll go to clothes store. If you’re hungry and want to grab a bite, you’ll go to the food court.
Like in the offline world, people online look for specific things, be it cheap car parts, new clothes or even a list of the 2018 Oscar nominees. This is where SEO comes in. It is there to try and make people find these things easier. We as search engine optimizers work to increase these websites and these search terms’ visibility online.
SEO means we work on many different levels and in many different fields to optimize any given website. Let’s say we’re working with, I don’t know, an airline. And we’ll call it Daniel Airlines. We’ll then start analyzing Daniel Airlines’ website but at the same time we analyze the entire airline industry online. We analyze what keywords they’re trying to rank for, we’re trying to see how many websites appear in search results and so forth.
Google has come a long way from the old days where you could manipulate it easily. These days you can’t use keyword stuffing and spammy backlinks in order to really rank high. These days, in order to rank high, you actually need good content on your website.
To sum it all up, optimizing your website is pretty easy. All you need is
- good on page,
- good metadata,
- good content,
- good backlinks
- and preferably someone who does SEO for a living.
Oh and one last thing – you should really consider doing a technical audit to your website, but unfortunately we don’t have time to go over that today.
